THOMAS JAY RYAN
THOMAS JAY RYAN is best known for playing the title role in Hal Hartley’s Cannes Festival prize-winning “HENRY FOOL” (“a swaggeringly good screen debut”, New York Times). He followed with the title role of Satan in Hartley’s “THE BOOK OF LIFE.” His other independent films include “DISCORD”, “THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING”, “NOON BLUE APPLES”, and Lynn Hershman Lesson’s “TEKNOLUST” (now in theatres).
He also appeared in Robert Redford’s “THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE”, and recently finished filming a role opposite Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in “ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND”, written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry.
On television, he played a leading role on the short-lived ABC series “WONDERLAND”, and played painter Edgar Degas in the HBO telefilm “DEGAS AND THE DANCER” (for which he was nominated for a Gemini Award- Canada’s version of the Emmy).
Raised in the US, Germany and Canada, Ryan attended Carnagie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh before beginning an impressive twenty-year career in a vast range of Off-Broadway and Regional theatres.
He began by mastering the classics at America’s foremost regional theatres, including the Gutherie in Minneapolis, Hartford Stage Company and Yale Repertory Theatre. In 1991 his career took a turn to the avant-garde and he worked extensively with the granddaddy of experimental thearte, director/playwright Richard Foreman. He originated leading roles in two Foreman plays and also appeared in Suzan Lori-parks “VENUS” at the New York Shakespeare Festival.
Recently, he has originated leading roles in a new plays by Craig Lucas (“THIS THING OF DARKNESS” at the Atlantic Theatre Company in New York), and David Rabe (“THE BLACK MONK” opposite Sam Waterson at Yale Repertory Theatre). He also had a leading role in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s “JUNO AND THE PAYCOCK” in 2000.
